It is a mix of mountains, vineyards, small medieval villages, and the bustling market towns of Nyons and Vaison la Romaine. The region is renown for wine, lavender, fruit and most of all, the olives of Nyons. During your holiday we try to ensure that you will experience all of the colour, taste and variety of scenery that makes Provence truly special. ITINERARY OVERVIEW We can also help with accommodation if you wish to extend your stay. Day 1 Saturday. Transfers from Avignon Airport or TGV Station takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. Settle in on arrival at the chalet, before a briefing at 7pm, including ‘Welcome’ drinks and snacks with your hosts. Day 2 Sunday. We begin with a short drive to Garde Grosse, the mountain overlooking Nyons. A brief fun walk leads to the adventure park with zip wires, tree swings and obstacles. For older or more energetic children we may arrange another more demanding park about an hour from Vinsobres. Finishing at about 3pm, it’s fun for all the family, also leaving plenty of time at the chalets for the children to swim, whilst parents can relax in the shade. Day 3 Monday. A scenic 30-minute drive takes us to another region, The Baronnies, famous for its mountain walks and rock-climbing. For the climbing we use a little training area, not too high, well equipped and ideal for fun climbing. It is also in the shade. For the abseiling we may well use a higher cliff. Return to your chalet around 4pm. Day 4 Tuesday. Today is a rest day and ideal for visiting the wonderful, exotic Vaison la Romaine market. We depart about 9am, to ensure there is time to explore not only the market, but also the Roman excavations and museum, the medieval town and the Cathedral. For lunch you can either buy a picnic from the market and find a shady spot near the river, or enjoy the cheap and cheerful menu du jour in one of many cafes in the town. | | | Day 5 Wednesday. This morning we head into the mountain country east of Nyons. The 40 minute drive is through the Gorge de St May with its towering cliffs, and tiny hamlets clinging to the sides of the gorge. From the village of Remuzat we will take a track alongside the river, and then climb the cliff side using fixed ladders and chains. This leads to a spectacular viewpoint looking down on the village, along with many Vultures soaring along the cliff edge. These Vultures have up to a 3-metre wingspan when adult. It’s a fabulous spot to observe and photograph them. A short walk down leads to a lovely picnic spot for a late lunch. Return to Vinsobres by about 4pm. Day 6 Thursday. Today is gorge walk day. We drive to the River Toulourenc and its gorge. After parking at the bottom and putting on old trainers and a wet suit top, the real adventure begins. The aim is to walk, swim, scramble and wade as far up the gorge as possible. Naturally, much depends on the water levels, but it is safe and great fun. Children usually enjoy this rough and ready activity day. After descending back down river again and drying off, we enjoy a relaxing picnic and cold drink in the shade. Possibly parents might want a short siesta whilst the children get wet again swimming in the river. Return to the chalets by about 4pm. | | Day 7 Friday. Today’s activity is canoeing down the upper Ardeche Gorge in open Canadian canoes. Departure is early, as it is a 90-minute drive to the canoe base. From there we are driven to the start point, which we need to reach by 9.30am. The 5 to 6 hour descent of the gorge includes exhilarating rapids and weir shoots, but also picturesque and peaceful sections that meander through lush countryside, with sandy beaches. We stop here and there to enjoy a beach and swim, have something to eat, or just relax. The canoes comfortably seat 2 or 3 people. Normally we have one adult and one child per canoe. Each canoe has a large waterproof barrel. Inside we place spare clothing, water, picnics and towels. The water is warm, and swimming or jumping from the rocks on the waters edge is enjoyable. Our minibus is parked at the end of the descent. After a quick change of clothing, we drive back to Vinsobres, via views of the famous lower gorge, arriving home about 6.30pm. The instructors will join the families for a final meal and drink together. Day 8 Saturday. This morning we bid farewell by 9 or 9.30am after your chalets have been cleaned and any damages noted. Please make sure that the chalets are left clean or, if using the service, left reasonably tidy. If applicable transfers to Nimes or Avignon Airport, or TGV Station will take place between 1pm and 1.45pm.
