The Best of the Luberon
From E750 to E950 this moderate walking holiday near Isle sur la Sorgue presents the gems that only the Luberon and surrounds offers – exploring the ruins of Oppede le Vieux, the ochre village of Roussillon, the poppies and lavender of the northern slopes, ancient villages, old farms, olive groves and cherry orchards. Our 6 days of walking includes Bonnieux, Menerbes, Roussillon, Gordes, Colorado Provencal
and the last day day and night in Avignon with guided tour and boat
trip along the famous waterfront of the Papal palace. Suitable for recreational walkers, graded moderate, with times varying between 2 to 5 hours daily. |

| ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS:
E750 per person is based on minimum of 4 persons, twin share, staying at Hotel Les Oliviers, a 2-Star hotel situated in the village of Coustellet, about 5kms from Gordes. Rooms are very comfortable with trees shading the terraces and overlooking the pool. There are many restaurants in the village, a 200 metre walk away. Includes
7 nights accommodation in ensuite room,
7 breakfasts, 4 picnic lunches with drinks and 2 evening meals.
the 7th night will be spent in an excellent hotel in the centre of
Avignon . Single supplement on request. Or E990 per person (minimum 4) twin share, staying at Hotel Carcarille, below Gordes. This hotel is beautifully decorated in Provencal style, set amongst vineyards and orchards, with extensive grounds and a swimming pool. Meals are excellent quality, with the emphasis on local produce and home cooking. Includes

The last night will be spent in a hotel in the centre of Avignon. Single supplement on request. The easily enjoyable 3 to 4 hour walks reflect the real taste and variety of this very beautiful and historical area of Provencal France. Only light packs are required and we return to comfort hotel accommodation and excellent food each day. | Day 1 Saturday. Transfers from Avignon Airport or TGV Station takes approximately 40 minutes. Settle in on arrival at the hotel, before ‘Welcome’ drinks and a briefing at 7pm, followed by dinner with your hosts. Day 2 Sunday. We begin with a gentle countryside walk from Maubec to Oppede le Vieux passing cherry orchards, vineyards and typical Luberon farms. An old track leads us up to Oppede, now partly in ruins, but a favourite with artists and photographers. Our guide will delight you with many colourful historical stories of this area, while enjoying our picnic lunch in the village. Our return walk ventures through the forest to Maubec to explore this old village. Later in the afternoon we visit Menerbes, made ‘famous’ by author Peter Mayle, finishing with drinks in a local bar. Distance 8kms/4hrs with stops.

| Day 3 Monday. Today’s delightful walk begins at the historic village of Bonnieux, following ancient trails through vineyards and orchards up into the famous Cedar Forest of the Grand Luberon, with excellent views over the Luberon Valley to the giant of Provence, Mont Ventoux.

We then walk along the summit ridge to a viewpoint facing south where we enjoy our picnic lunch with views of Mont St Victoire and the Alpilles, of Van Gogh fame. Return to Bonnieux via another trail and a relaxed stroll through the village before returning to your hotel. Distance 10kms/5hrs with stops.

| Day 4 Tuesday. Today we venture to the village of Buoux, beginning with the exploration of the famous Fort of Buoux, spectacularly situated on a spine of rock overlooking the ancient Buoux Valley. We then continue up the valley, passing an old farm now converted to an Auberge, and onto the GR 5. Our path finally leads up onto the top of the cliffs with superb views overlooking the valley, the farm and fort. As we head back towards the village we stop to enjoy our picnic lunch under shady trees, resting before descending through lavender fields and meadows to Buoux. There is time for another rest or stroll through the village, before returning down into the valley along a tiny road and back to the minibus. A short drive then brings us to APT, for a leisurely stroll through the pedestrian shopping centre, before returning to our hotel. Distance 8kms/5hrs with stops. |

Day 5 Wednesday.
This morning our 40-minute drive takes us to Viens, in the attractive north east corner of the Luberon Valley. Viens is a thriving medieval village at the heart of a farming community, and time is spent exploring its many delights prior to our walk. Passing lavender fields, orchards and forests, we pause enroute to enjoy our picnic lunch in these stunning surrounds, before arriving at the Colorado Provencal ochre quarries. The bright colours of the ochre cliffs are awe inspiring, and a favourite for artists and photographers. We then return to our base via the quaint village of St Saturnin with its windmills, and impressive fortifications. Distance 15kms/5hrs with stops.

Day 6 Thursday. This morning we have a more leisurely start, departing at 9.30am for a short drive to Roussillon for the local market. This attractive artists’ village and its ochre tonings make it a photographers delight. The morning is free for you to explore the village at leisure, and then enjoy your lunch from either the market, or in one of the numerous and delightful local restaurants. At 2pm we depart for Gordes via Gargas, stopping to absorb the history of this little village and church, before continuing to Gordes, where you are again free for the next hour to explore the town and its history at your leisure. Our day ends with a visit to the Abbey of Senanque, before returning to the hotel. For those staying at Hotel Carcarille, as the hotel is closed for dinner this evening, we provide transport to Gordes for your dinner tonight.

Day 7 Friday...
We depart for Avignon for our last day with a transfer to
our hotel in order to leave the bags. The first part of the
day will be a guided tour of old Avignon,. Clients are then
free to explore ,shop or just relax . In the afternoon a
boat excursion of about 1hr 30 follows the beautiful line of
the fortifications and the palace..really the best way to
see the magnificent buildings..A final group supper will
take place near the Opera House in a superb medieval setting
.Your guide bids farewell this evening.

are direct bus transfers from near the hotel to the airport
and TGV Station . The central Rail Station is onlt 10 minutes
